Positioning Upstate New York as a WorldâClass Technology Corridor
Since 1990, the combined population of the four largest metro areas in Upstate New York
(Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo) has not experienced any growth (see Appendix 1).
Yet during this same timeframe, the population in numerous other metro areas in the U.S. has
increased at a moderate rate. As a result, the ranking of Upstate New York’s largest metro
areas has declined against the largest MSAs in the United States, according to the U.S. Census
Bureau. Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, and Syracuse were ranked among the top 37 to 64 metro
cities in the U.S. in 1990 (refer to Table 1). By 2008, they had fallen to the top 47 to 80 metro
cities in the U.S. If this trend continues, Upstate New York is approaching the day where it will
no longer have a city that is among the top 50 MSAs in the United States.
FACTNY, (Food and Agriculture Collaborating through Technology in New York) is an informal, collaborative network comprised of agribusiness companies and others from across the state.
The goal of the organization is to share information amongst the members that will enable all to add value to their own business.
